Among other units and activities at Dhofar University (DU), the Continuing Education Center (CEC) marks the University’s strong commitment to serve the governorate of Dhofar after which it is named. Striving to become a center of excellence for the community and beyond in a diversity of development-related programs, CEC harnesses the quality human resources available at Dhofar University (DU) in various fields of knowledge. It offers a wide array of generic and customized certificate programs, non-credit courses and training workshops to meet the lifelong learning and training needs of learners in the local community, the Sultanate, and the Gulf region.
CEC programs cover languages (currently English and Arabic), computer science, engineering, business administration, and special programs or topics. Each of these programs could be subdivided into a number of sub-programs or courses. For example, the English language program includes “General English” which aims at developing general language proficiency, but it also includes several sub-programs that target certain occupations: “English for Secretaries”, “English for Tourism”, and “Business English”. We also have plans to initiate new customized programs to learners outside the Sultanate such as teaching Arabic to speakers of other languages.
The objectives of CEC are to enhance professional and technical skills and address the needs for personal development and cultural enrichment. Undoubtedly, CEC students are investing in their own human capital, a worthwhile investment that should pay off in the years ahead. In the 21st century, successful people are continuous lifelong learners. While many graduate only once in their lives from high schools and universities, they would eventually discover the need to join continuing education programs periodically, to upgrade their skills and knowledge, acquire knowledge in new fields, or rekindle their zest for learning.
