Faculty Updates 2010-2011
Welcome back!
As we are all preparing for the fall semester,
I wanted to share with you some tips presented at the "Writing across the
Curriculum" workshop given by the CTL in the spring.
Vocabulary/Key Words:
-
Do not write out the definitions (which
students can memorize & repeat by rote without understanding)- giver the
words and have the students write the definitions themselves. For
example, give students the list one day, the next day ask students to
share the definitions they discovered.
-
Give additional information about key
vocabulary:
-
If possible, explain the part of speech (is the word a noun or a
verb?)
-
explain how the word is used in a sentence, i.e. what prepositions
are used with what verb - i.e. refers to and followed by
Presenting Information:
-
Use tables/graphs/ charts where
appropriate and introduce language to describe the information
-
At the beginning of the semester
ask students to give simple presentations until they learn to
feel comfortable talking in English in front of the class. Then
assign students to read pages/ chapters and present the
information to the class by rephrasing what they have read
Creating Written
Assignments:
-
Give students models for each
writing assignment you give - not something that they can
copy verbatim but an example so students can see in detail
what kind of writing you want
-
Create assignments which are
specific for your course to prevent students from handing in
a paper written for another section/ semester of the same
course or a different class at DU
Assessing Written
Assignments:
-
Asking students to use key
vocabulary in written assignments
-
Adding a grammar/
vocabulary component to the grade for written
assignments, i.e. reduce marks for incomplete sentences
and/or incorrect grammar
Tests and
quizzes:
