As part of CTL mission to foster a unified culture of teaching through idea sharing and discussions, two faculty members from the Department of Language and Translation collaborated with CTL and conducted workshops for their department faculty. These workshops took place on the 16^th and 23^rd of February and 15 faculty members from the L& T department participated.

Language Assessment

Mrs. Helen Woerner presented the first workshop. She had just attended a conference in Dubai on effective language assessment and shared with the participants the latest ideas, issues, and findings. The discussions focused on the rationale for writing test specifications in language courses, understanding of key testing concepts, and principles of assessment.

Creating Effective Assignments

Dr. Marielle Risse presented the second workshop “Giving Students the Chance to Honestly Shine”. She pointed out that the aim of this workshop is to create a forum in which the Department of L & T can discuss issues together. It then becomes possible to re-create such forums in other departments to increase awareness of the importance of creating effective assignments and assessments at Dhofar University. Dr. Risse and the participants discussed procedures for creating effective writing assignments and guidelines for testing procedures.
