"The population of Salalah is made up of a very interesting mix of people, from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, who have traditions that differ from other regions of Oman. When new faculty and staff members arrive at Dhofar University who have never lived or worked in this area of the Middle East, or specifically this area of Oman, they will find some traditions and habits fascinating and others a little difficult to understand. They usually have a lot of questions! As a former Canadian who arrived in 1979, as a teacher, with little knowledge about the local culture, but who has since been granted Omani citizenship, has raised children here and lived as part of a large, extended Dhofari family, I understand a fair amount about what matters to the people here, and am familiar with the questions that newcomers ask.
