Computing and Networking Services
The Computing and Networking Services Department (CNSD
provides students with state-of-the-art information and
technology resources that they can use as an integral part
of their academic work. It has eleven computer labs
including an ICDL computer lab, a business computer lab,
a Graphic Design computer lab, and a language computer
lab for the sole usage of the students in the Foundation
Program Unit with an average of 25 computers per lab. There
are also 26 computers in the library set for research and
general usage. All labs meet the high standards of the
University and are equipped with top of the line computers,
laser printers, and projectors, and are connected to a
high speed, Internet-linked network.
The University has subscribed to over 165 on-line journals.
It has two ADSL lines with
384 Kbps upload and 1 Mbps download rates, and an additional
LEASED line with 512K bandwidth. The University has also
acquired a new storage facility that allows the web service
to upgrade to a stable server behind a firewall backed
up daily with a 3 Gigabyte storage capacity and a transfer
rate of 100 Gigabytes per month and access to an MS SQL
server. This facility enables faculty members to create
their individual sub-domains on the World Wide Web.
Continuing Education Center (CEC)
The Continuing Education Center (CEC) at DU provides (a)
services to applicants who aspire to enter the University
but fail in the placement tests conducted by the Foundation
Program and (b) offers quality educational programs
to meet the ongoing professional and personal needs of Dhofar’s adult community at large. It is
dedicated to stimulating the generation of training modules
in order to serve individuals in the private and public
sectors in new and innovative ways. It offers solutions
to training needs and provides its community with the
combined support of a professional staff and the many
resources of DU.
CEC provides on-campus and off-campus programs that include
certificate programs, workshops, seminars, conferences,
and customized training programs to meet the needs of individuals
and organizations. All CEC’s certificate programs,
workshops, and other activities are taught by leading experts
who bring their hands-on experience into the classroom. Programs
and courses are offered in English or Arabic as reflected
by the course outlines. The programs of CEC are developed
to create an opportunity for strengthening and updating
skills and learning new techniques for achieving personal
and organizational goals. CEC prepares participants for
a world of change and their organizations for success by
using an innovative approach and programs specifically
developed by expert DU faculty members.
Health Care
DU expatriate employees receive health care through a
health insurance policy from the National Life Insurance
(NLI) Company, whereas Omani employees benefit from Government
medical services providers. NLI were the first ISO
9002 certified company, recently upgraded to ISO 9001:
2000 and it offers the following services:
- Group life for all employees
- Workmen’s compensation for all employees
- Repatriation expenses for expatriates
- Medical expenses (accidents, sickness and medication)
for expatriate employees and their eligible dependents
that live with them in Salalah.
Medical Office
DU operates also a medical office on campus with an attending
physician who refers complicated cases to specialized health
care facilities in the city of Salalah. |
