On Wednesday, May 2nd, under the auspices of His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Saif Al Mahrouqi, Deputy Governor of Dhofar, Dhofar University ended the events of Open Day 2007, which had been held under the slogan of “Sailing in Creativity”. The slogan was an apt one, since this year, especially, a larger variety of students’ work was on show to everyone who entered DU or read or saw any media coverage of Open Day. The students didn’t only exhibit their work and activities to the visitors through the art, social, culture and creative exhibitions; they also reached out to serve the community in the most effective way they could by giving large donations to charitable institutions such as Al Nur Institute for the Blind and Al Wafa Center for Children with Special Needs. The events of Open Day this year reflected the wonderful organization and hard work that had been produced by the students, who had put their hearts and souls into their projects.

The closing ceremony of Culture Week’s activities was held at the Ministry of Heritage and Culture Theater. At the event, Prof. Muhammed Ali Faour, Vice Chancellor of DU gave a speech in which he said that Culture Week was an annual occasion that gave the students a chance to present their talents and creative works of art. He added that the slogan of Open Day this year had been “Sailing in Creativity” and the students had interpreted this slogan by their tangible creative efforts in different fields as they sought mastery in their work. At the end of his speech he thanked all companies, faculty members, students, administrators, visitors and the hard working support staff, all of whom had contributed greatly to the success of the week's events.

A film about the activities of Open Day and Culture Week was shown before some well known Omani Poets gave a recital of their poems. Among them were Salim Bakheet Al Mashani ('Abu Qais') and the poet Fahad Al Sa’di. The celebration ended with the presentation of prizes and certificates of appreciation being distributed to all participants and sponsoring companies.
