Dhofar University Concludes A Campaign to Help Patients at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah
As part of its community service strategic goal, Dhofar University organized a fund- raising campaign to help abandoned children and needy and handicapped patients at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah. DU students particularly from the social work major, led by Laila AlShahri chair of the community relations committee at the Office of Information and Public Relations, collected donations from students, faculty and staff. The collected amount was used to buy gifts that suited the needs of the targeted group of patients. This campaign of charity aimed at nurturing the spirit of giving and helping others and of volunteering to do social and community service. To conclude this campaign which lasted for over a month, a ceremony was held at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah on June, 2008. Present were all the student and staff who participated in the campaign along with senior staff from the hospital and the University. The Executive Manager of the hospital Dr. Ahmad bin Taher Ba Omar delivered a speech in which he commended the cooperation between the hospital and DU as a model for collaboration and partnership between educational institutions and the local community organizations. He expressed his gratitude for DU’s support to Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah through various means: blood donations, guest lectures, social work internships, and volunteering services. In response, the Vice Chancellor of DU, Professor Muhammad Ali Faour thanked the hospital administration for their cooperation with the University and assistance with training DU students of social work. He emphasized the critical role of DU in supporting the local community in the Dhofar region and in furthering quality education in the Sultanate, all of which come as part of the strategic plan of the University.
