The 37th National Day celebrations took place
at Dhofar University’s Ibn Rushd Hall,
in an air of excitement and pride, the day initiated
by a group of local dancers, who made their way
around the campus early in the morning, entertaining
faculty, staff and students with their drumming
and dancing. Guests eventually made their way
to the theatre, where the official program was
to be held. Prof. Muhammad Faour, Vice Chancellor
of Dhofar University, Deans of the Colleges of
Arts and Applied Sciences, and faculty and staff,
as well as students and invited guests filled
the theatre.
The party began with the National
Anthem, followed by a reading from the Holy Qur’an, and
a speech by Ms. Wathiqa Bait Saeed, who thanked
Lama Furniture, and Shabiba Newspaper for sponsoring
the celebration, and all those who organized
the many events, including, Ahmed Ma’aroof,
Salim Al Hafeedh, support staff, and the many
students involved in Cultural and Theatrical
Activities Group.
A very special event was a combination
of poetry and film, depicting the different Wilayas
of the Sultanate. It was particularly moving,
firstly because of the presentation, on film,
of what makes each Omani Wilaya unique, and secondly
because of the accompanying poems read by DU
students describing each wilaya. The well known
poet, Salah bin Shajanaa, who also joined the
students on stage, recited a poem about
one of His Majesty’s most famous speeches.
During
the morning, a play was performed entitled “All’s
Well”, a comedy portraying the trials and
tribulations of a typical Omani family. Half
way through the celebrations, another one of
the hit events was the giving away of prizes
to members of the audience with lucky numbers
on their programs. One of the students also produced
a well organized presentation on graduation.
The
events, which were covered for the media by reporters
and photographers from Oman TV, and the Shabiba,
Oman, and Al Watan newspapers gave the university
community and their guests a wonderful chance
to enjoy a day together, in celebration of a
very special occasion. |
