Dhofar University Vice Chancellor: “We are Striving to Graduate Qualified Teachers”

Announcement of names of students accepted in the Teaching Diploma Program for Academic Year 2007-08

The College of Arts and Applied Sciences announced on the 22nd of September, 2007 the names of the students who were accepted in the Teaching Diploma Program for the academic year 2007/2008. The students who applied for the program had to take an evaluation test and an interview which determined whether the student was qualified enough to enter the program. Prof. Muhammad Faour, Vice Chancellor of Dhofar University, said that the University strives to graduate qualified teachers who will help raise the level of education in the Sultanate. He added that the University believes in the importance of the role of the teacher in inspiring their students, and instilling good habits and a feeling of responsibility in them towards their country. This is why the University has taken on the task of preparing the future teachers to be able to deal with the rapid changes in the education of our Omani society.
Dr. Hussein Yaghi, Dean of the College of Arts and Applied Sciences and the Head of the Department of Education at Dhofar University, said that the Department had announced last week the names of the students who had been accepted into the Teaching Diploma Program for the academic year 2007/2008. Fifty students were accepted this year in the English Language Program, twenty two students in Arabic, twelve students in Informatics and two students in Social Studies. Dr. Yaghi added that in order to improve the quality of education in the Sultanate, the students had to undergo an interview and an evaluation test before entering the program, as if they had been applying for a teaching job. He said that the University is taking its role very seriously indeed, and wanted to make sure that the teachers would be ready to move comfortably and efficiently into their roles as teachers when they had finished their diploma studies.
