Mr. Muhammed Yousoof of the Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Applied Sciences represented Dhofar University in the 20th International Conference on Computer Systems and Engineering held at Barcelona, Spain from 25th April to 27th April 2007.The conference was organized by WASET (World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology), an organization working to foster research and development in the field of computer science.

The conference had several tracks and many papers were presented which are of vital importance to computer field. To name a few, papers on genetic algorithms, virology, image processing, cognitive sciences, intelligent agents and intelligent systems were included. Most of the presenters were notably from Europe with a few others from across Africa, the Indian sub continent and the Middle East. Various research topics were presented and discussed at the conference.

Mr. Muhammed Yousoof presented a paper entitled “Measuring Cognitive Load- A Solution to Ease Learning Programming” at the conference. The paper proposed a new modified prototype of Intelligent Tutoring Systems in which an additional component called Cognitive Load Measurement is included in the prototype. This component could monitor the load experienced by the learner during pre, post and in instructional stages. The inclusion of intelligent agents in the component will help in tailoring the instructional design appropriately when the learner experiences the load. This system, when implemented as a full fledged system could help minimize the learning difficulties experienced by novice programmers. Mr. Muhammed Yousoof felt that presenting the paper at this international conference was a remarkable experience and he also acknowledged the support extended by Dhofar University for research through its research grant.
