Two New Academic Programs at DU |

1. Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching English Language 39 Credit Hours Dhofar University will start offering a program that leads to a Master in Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching English Language this coming September (2008) according to a recent approval by the Ministry of Higher Education. It is a two-year program that aims to prepare effective teachers and practitioners to teach English language according to international standards and contemporary thought in the field. The program of study consists of a series of specialization courses in language acquisition, second language teaching and learning, assessment and evaluation, designing and producing educational materials, in addition to core courses in educational psychology, research design and methodology, and the foundations of education. Additionally, the program requires the students to prepare professional portfolios, perform practical work in the filed, and conduct practical research in the filed. Admission: Admission to the Master in Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching English Language is competitive and requires the candidate to:
Duration: The program may be completed in two years normally, however students may take less time if they take more than four courses per semester, or more time if they take less than four courses per semester. Tuition: 110 Omani Riyals per credit hour.
2. Chemical Engineering Program at DUDiploma 72 hoursBS 136 hoursThe College of Engineering at Dhofar University is introducing a new program in Chemical Engineering leading to a Diploma and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, with a minor in Petroleum Engineering. The new program has been established to satisfy the increasing demand in the Sultanate and the region for experts in chemical engineering, and petroleum studies. As an established field, chemical engineering involves the design, operation, and maintenance of diverse range of chemical, physical, and biological processes for small, medium, and large-scale manufacturing. Graduates of the chemical engineering program will be able to handle careers in modern industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, paper manufacturing, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, and many other industries. A wide range of these industries already exists in the Sultanate and in the region. A track in Petroleum engineering has been emphasized in the program through a set of courses leading to a minor in Petroleum engineering. It covers a number of diverse topics including, but not restricted to, geochemistry, oil drilling, well logging, advanced mathematics, economics, reservoir development, pipelining, well completion, and oil and gas production. The plan of study (POS) of the new program is set in accordance with the DU and CE requirements. More details are available in the 2008-09 University catalogue, and in the College offices. Admission: Same admission criteria that are used with other Engineering specializations will be applied in the new program. Tuition: Same tuition fees as other Engineering specializations.
