Workshop on “Writing across the Curriculum”

On May 16 and 18, 2009, Dr. Basma Faour, the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Dr. Marielle Risse, Assistant Professor in the Language and Translation Department, at DU presented a workshop on “Writing across the Curriculum”. The workshop was attended by 48 faculty members from the various colleges and the Foundation Program at DU. The attendees were introduced to Writing across the Curriculum (WAC) which was developed in the mid-1970’s. This approach provides students with the opportunity to use written language to develop and communicate knowledge in every discipline. The attendees gathered basic tips on integrating writing into content courses and discussed new ideas about low stakes and high stakes writing for improving students' learning. They also gained knowledge about techniques to incorporate writing into their content courses, as well as design effective writing assignments that encourage students’ engagement with the course material.
