Dhofar University Represented at 6 th ASIATEFL Conference in Bali , Indonesia

from the Conference

Khader Nawaz Khan , Instructor in the Foundation Program, represented Dhofar University at the 6 th ASIATEFL Conference held from 1 st to 3 rd August, 2008 in Bali , Indonesia . He presented a paper entitled,
“ Asianizing English or Anglicising (Americanizing) Asia  Implications of Globalization and Culture Dominated ELT in the Asian Context.” In his paper, he argued that there was a need to produce ELT course books with local cultural content rather than the culture of the western countries. Globalization, along with the global spread of the English language, is taking a toll on native languages and cultures. While admitting the fact that the English language is here to stay for years to come, and that there is a need for learning the language in a globalized world, he argued that preserving native cultures and languages from the onslaught of the Anglo-American cultures is of urgent necessity. One way of doing it is to localize the English language teaching in Asia . Koreans, Japanese and Chinese delegates at the conference echoed the same view.
