Dhofar University, which was established with
technical support from the American University
of Beirut is studying the possibility
of opening a new Chemical Engineering major in
the College of Engineering, with a minor in Petroleum
Studies. This is part of the general plan to
create a variety of new and suitable majors at
the University. A team from the Chemistry Department
and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department
at AUB visited DU between the 3rd and 8th of
November, 2007. Accompanied by Prof. Farid Chaaban,
Dean of the College of Engineering, they met
with companies and organizations in Salalah as
well as Muscat in order to acquire information
about how the graduates from this major could
help in the development of the job market related
to the field of Chemical Engineering. The members
of the team from AUB who are working on this
project are Dr. Mazen Al Ghoul, Chairperson of
the Chemistry Department, Dr. Riadh Chedid, Coordinator
of Engineering Programs and Dr. Karim Kabalan,
Chairperson of the ECE Department in the Engineering
College and Advisor on Quality Audit Issues.
During their visit, they met with Octal Petrochemicals,
Salalah Methanol Company, Petroleum Oman Development
and Gulf Plastic Industries Company.
Dhofar University wishes to keep the public informed
about what it has to offer both now and in the
future, and to this end, links are being forged
with many institutions and organizations within
the local community. As far as DU students are
concerned, establishing those links will give them
a better understanding of what the needs of the
local market are, and also provide them with an
excellent chance of finding jobs related to their
chosen fields. |
