Delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education Visits Dhofar University and meets with students, looking for the latest developments and the future plans of the university

 

Acting Vice Chancellor: the University is working to implement a new strategic plan that keeps pace with future aspirations

A delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education visited Dhofar University yesterday morning, as part of the field visits the Ministry carries out annually to discuss the developments and future plans of the University and monitor the implementation of the recommendations of the field visit of the previous year, promoting cooperation and maintaining continuous communication between the Ministry of Higher Education and private institutions of higher education in the Sultanate.

The visit included a number of meetings attended by Prof. Dr. Bassam Jubran Acting Vice Chancellor, the Deans of the Colleges, Head of Departments and Directors of non-academic Departments and support services.  Dr. Jubran reviewed the university’s most important achievements at various levels, indicating that the initiatives undertaken by the University during the last period were designed to overcome difficulties, increase the effectiveness of the university, and find mechanisms to enhance the institutional work.

With regard to the process of transition to the new campus, the Acting Vice Chancellor said it was carried out according to plan, with great effectiveness and participation of the academic community as a whole, praising the efforts of the technical staff in charge of managing the project and the contractors.  With regard to the initiatives undertaken by the University, the Acting Vice Chancellor indicated that the university added rest areas for students in the open areas in the colleges, put traffic signals and signs to facilitate the movement within the campus, installed wireless internet throughout the university and encouraged students to make use of it, and developed bylaws for distribution and publishing university news.  Dr. Jubran spoke also about the initiatives undertaken with regard to the colleges, units, academic programs, students, issuing bylaws, policies and procedures, and the formation of committees to develop career ladders, training of personnel and development of a manual for each administrative unit to organize its work and strengthen institutional mentality.  He added that a committee was formed to develop detailed regulations to promote institutional effectiveness and help determine responsibilities, giving more powers to the deans, department heads and directors of departments through the application of these regulations.  He also said that work is under way to develop a new strategic plan for the University with the participation of a large sector of the faculty and other employees, taking into account the new developments and the new university campus, and adding that the new plan will include a mechanism for its annual application and follow-up operational plans in light of the budget.  The Acting Vice Chancellor asserted that in the near future he will be developing scenarios for a strategic plan for marketing, promotion and increase in the number of students at the university for the next five years.

It should be added that in his presentation, the Acting Vice Chancellor praised the role of the Student Council and hoped to increase its effectiveness in the university and valued the procedures that the University has implemented during the period from August 2010 until March 2011.

During its visit to Dhofar University, the delegation met students and discussed with them all the issues that they raised and were concerned with.
