Dhofar University hosts a lecture on Nuclear Energy in Oman:

Hopes and Challenges

Dr. Ahmed Bin Dhofar Al Rawas, Associate Professor at Sultan Qaboos University presented a lecture on Hopes and Challenges of Nuclear Energy in Oman.  In his introduction, Dr. Al Rawas cited the decision of the Higher Council of GCC countries in its 27th Conference known as Jaber Conference in Riyadh in December 2006 to conduct a common study for the needs of all GCC countries for the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, including the production of electricity and water desalination.

In the main part of his lecture, Dr. Al Rawas elaborated on the history of nuclear energy in the world and the different kinds and generation of nuclear reactors available in various countries.  He noted the various uses of nuclear energy and  continuous increase in the need and demand for safe nuclear energy, especially in Oman.  He considered the increase in Oman's population for the next 40 years and underscored the need for more energy and water, concluding that Oman needs more energy in the future and that going the nuclear energy route is the best option in the long run.  However, this option requires adequate preparation, particularly in providing the infrastructure and the human cadres of specialists.
