International Conference on “EMERGING TRENDS IN TEACHING LANGUAGE & LITERATURE”

( INCOETTLL-09)

The Department of English and Foreign Languages hosted an International Conference on “Emerging Trends in Teaching Language and Literature” in continuation of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Alagappa University on 4th and 5th November, 2009. The conference highlighted the inculcation of non-traditional and innovative strategies and techniques to resolve the problems in Language Learning and to meet the challenges of an emerging dynamic learning society.
The paper I presented was “Internet-based Language Labs in Teaching Listening Skill”. Technology, especially the internet is affecting every aspect of education. Language teachers almost anywhere in the world are able to expose students to authentic language and even put them directly in real time,
with native speakers of a given target language.

When I presented this paper, I could magnify the use of internet in exploring the availability of various educational sites. Subsequently I illustrated some useful features of Net Support School software which is currently installed in DU English Language Labs and the effective materials for internet-based listening comprehension for EFL learners by focusing on Randall’s ESL/EFL Cyber Listening Lab. This unique website is designed both for ESL/EFL learners and the teachers who want to improve their learners’ listening skills. It is freely available even in low speed internet connections. It has got three different modules: easy, medium and difficult for the upper intermediate students. The purpose of this site is to help the learner learn language that is used in everyday conversation. Thus, Randall’s listening lab is designed to help the learner become familiar with common vocabulary and expressions which can be used all the time in many situations. According to (Kenning.M.J, 1984) it allows learners to work on their own, in their own time and, most importantly, at their own pace.
Randall (2007) comments that choosing a topic, listening and reading along with paragraph, and then discussing the questions with a partner and choosing the multiple-choice items and finally seeing the results of understanding privately motivates the learners. www.esl-lab.com
Since my presentation was much appreciated by the Alagappa University council, I was presented a memento by Dr.Natarajan the syndicate member of Alagappa University.
