DU Participation in Sports Day at SQU (28 December 2005)

Dhofar University participated in the Sports Day at Sultan Qaboos University. The DU delegation who traveled to Muscat for the occasion consisted of Mr. Salim Kashoob, Supervisor of Sports Activities, Mr. Zaid Zabanoot, Lecturer from the Computer Science Department, and the DU students’ Sports Team, made up of Mr. Abdullah Al Ojaili, Mr. Ahmed Al Haddad, Mr. Nizar Abdullfakir, Mr. Sultan Al Kilbani, Mr. Mohammed Hizaji, Mr. Yousuf Al Ibrahim, Mr. Hisham Al Nobi, and Mr. Abdullah Al Ma’amari.

Session with Dean of CAAS (28 December 2005)

An Open Session was held with Dr. Hussein Yaghi, Dean of CAAS at DU. A number of administrative and academic staff and members of the USFC at DU were present. Dr. Souma Abujouda, Head of the Department of Education at AUB, attended as an honored guest.

Bank Muscat at DU (27 December 2005)

A group from Bank Muscat visited Dhofar University to present a presentation on the services and offers of the current season for DU employees and students.
This group was consisting of Mr. Mohammed Shahid, Ms. Manasek Al Musawi, Mr. Ahmad Al Mashani and Mr. Mohammed Al Balushi.

Psychological Counseling and Guidance Symposium (20 – 28 December 2005)

Dhofar University participated in a symposium on "Psychological Counseling and Guidance" at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat. This symposium focused on the importance of psychological counseling at the educational institutes all around the Sultanate.
Mrs. Amira Al Helo, Educational Advisor from Student Affairs represented Dhofar University at the symposium.


Boeing Company Assists Dhofar University (20 December 2005)

Mrs. Aysha Al Kharusi, Director of Strategy Development Department at the Boeing Company in the United Arab Emirates, visited Dhofar University. Dr. Hassan Diab, President of the University, received her in his office, and they discussed opportunities for cooperation between Boeing and DU. The University asked for help from the Boeing Company in measuring the maximum height of the buildings at the new DU Campus so that they wouldn’t present any problems for planes landing at Salalah Airport, which is very near the site.

Delegation from Ministry of Higher Education Visits Dhofar University
(19 December 2005)

A delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education, consisting of Dr. Khamees bin Saleh Al-Balushi, Deputy Director of Directorate General of Private Universities and Colleges, Mr. Khalifa bin Nasser Al-Wahebi, Director of Accreditation and Supervision, and Mr. Masoud bin Ali Al-Harthi, Director of Education Services visited Dhofar University. Dr. Hassan Diab, President of the University, received the delegation and gave them a full briefing on the history and development of DU, on the programs and facilities it has to offer, and also on the University’s plans for the future.

Training for New LOGOS Financial Systems in Beirut (17 – 25 December 2005)

Based on the agreement between Dhofar University and the Logos Company to provide the University with a fully automated system to improve its student and administrative services, the University sent a group consisting of Mr. Majed Roz - Director of Finance, Mr. Mohamad Al Bolbol – Technical Manager, Mr. Hassan Kashoob and Ms. Latifa Saleem to attend a training workshop in the LOGOS Financial System, in Beirut. Dhofar University will begin using the LOGOS System during the Spring Semester of 2005 – 2006.
This training came after the successful completion of the first phase, which included the Registration, Admissions and Student Accounting programs, and took place in the central building of the LOGOS Company in Beirut. The training also included the General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Fixed Assets systems, in addition to the Logos Data Conversion Systems that will be adapted to convert the existing system at DU.


Oman Mobile Inaugurates ICDL Program at Dhofar University (17 December 2005)

Training in the International Computer Driving License Program (ICDL) program at Dhofar University began with a course given to employees of Oman Mobile Telecommunications Company. Oman Mobile Head of Contributors Services Department in Dhofar Province, Engineer Mr. Mohamed Said Al-Yafai, said, at the opening of the course, “This program is part of the result of cooperation between Oman Mobile and Dhofar University so that we may benefit from the scientific and technical expertise available at the University. We are constantly trying to improve the skills of our employees so that they are able to offer better services to our customers. The course offers very useful and relevant training for our staff.”

Meeting of General Assembly at DU (14 December 2005)

The shareholders of Dhofar University Company held their second General Normal Assembly at the University. This meeting was held in order to study the outcome of the work done by DU during the Academic Year 2004/ 2005, which ended on August 31st, 2005.
His Excellency Abdulallam bin Mustahil Rakhyot, Head of the Administrative Council of the DU Company, spoke of the achievements
made during the first year of DU’s existence. DU was provided with equipment and facilities required to start the next academic year.
A new temporary building was constructed that included a number of classrooms, labs and administrative offices, and was a welcome addition to the existing temporary buildings. He added that the collaboration between DU and AUB in Beirut played a significant role in the successes that DU had already achieved.


Regional Conference on Environment and Development (12 – 14 December 2005)

Mr. Muawya Hussein, Lecturer in Department of Accounting and Finance at CCBA, represented Dhofar University in the Regional Conference on Environment and Development that was held in Salalah, Oman. He presented a paper entitled
“Introduction environment dimension in development”.


DU President Presents Paper in Symposium at College of Education in Salalah.
(13 December 2005)

Dhofar University participated in the “Development and Environment” Symposium that was held at the College of Education in Salalah. It was inaugurated under the auspices of His Excellency Abdullah bin Saif Al Mahrooqi, Deputy Dhofar Governor and was attended by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Sarmi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education.
Papers were presented by Dr. Jamal Dawood and Dr. Muawya Ahmed from the College of Commerce and Business Administration. Dr. Hassan Diab, DU President also gave a paper on the role of the private universities in the continuing development of Oman.


Under Secretary of Ministry of Higher Education Visits Dhofar University
(12 December 2005)

His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al-Sarmi – Under Secretary of Ministry of Higher Education visited Dhofar University, accompanied by Dr. Said Bin Hamad Al-Rabie, General Director of Private Universities and Colleges, Mr. Abdul-Nabi Bin Abdul-Rasool, Director of Public Relations, and Mr. Moosa Bin Ali Al-Manthari, Notary of Administrative Affairs of the Under Secretary for the Ministry of Higher Education’s Office.
Dr. Al-Sarmi said, “Dhofar University is an emerging institution that is close to our hearts, as it bears the name of a region that is very dear to us. At the same time, its collaboration with such a high-ranking university – the American University of
Beirut – adds to its academic domain. We are optimistic that Dhofar University will hold a high position in the Sultanate of Oman as well as within the region.”


AUB President Visits Dhofar University (9 December 2005)

The American University of Beirut (AUB) President, Dr. John Waterbury, recently visited Dhofar University. The AUB President met with Prof. Hassan Diab, President of Dhofar University, as well as the Dean of the College of Arts and Applied Sciences, the Dean of Commerce and Business Administration, the Assistant to the President for Finance and Administrative Affairs, and the Assistant to the President for Student Affairs. During his three-day visit, President Waterbury reviewed the final plans for the construction of the new Dhofar University campus, slated to complete its first stage of construction by 2008.

Prof. Hassan Diab Attends Graduation Ceremony at SQU (25 – 28 November 2005)

Prof. Hassan Diab, President of DU was invited by Sultan Qaboos University to attend their graduation ceremony in Muscat.

26 – 28 November 2005: “Art of Speech”

A symposium on the "Art of Speech" was presented by Dr. Ahmed Al Mashani, the Assistant to the President for Student Affairs, and Mr. Eltayeb Elfeel, the Head of the Continuing Education Center at Dhofar University. This symposium was held in the office of the Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar.
The symposium concentrated on the concepts of speech and logical thinking and on how to make use of these concepts so they could enhance one’s own personal characteristics.


Dr. Hocine Merabet Attends IT Education Workshop (23 - 24 November 2005)

Dr. Hocine Merabet, Chairman of the Mathematics and Sciences Unit in the College of Arts and Applied Sciences, represented Dhofar University in the “Educational Media and Technologies Exhibition and Workshop” that was held at the Oman International Exhibition Center in Muscat. The workshop was organized to take place within the framework of the celebrations of Oman’s 35th National Day.

Al Madinah Kindergarten at DU (21 November 2005)


A group of children from the Al Madinah Kindergarten made a visit to Dhofar University, where they met the President, Prof. Hassan Diab, and presented him with a gift, on the occasion of their country’s 35th National Day.
The visitors gave a brief introduction to the President about the history and development of the Kindergarten. Their visit to the University was part of a program by the Kindergarten to visit a variety of companies and institutes to congratulate them on the occasion of Oman’s National Day.


Iftar Invitation (21 November 2005)

Dhofar University invited the administrative and academic staff to take Iftar together one evening during Ramadhan. The staff gathered at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where they were able to enjoy the occasion of breaking of the fast together.

National Day Activities (20 November 2005)

On the Occasion of the 35th National Day, Dhofar University celebrated by presenting many activities such as plays, poetry evenings, ceremonies and seminars. One of the activities was a play, put on by the Salalah Theater Group, with the collaboration of Dhofar University.

2nd Students Engineering Gathering (14 – 15 November 2005)

Dhofar University participated in the 2nd Engineering Gathering at Sultan Qaboos University. Dr, Frank Nickols, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering, and Mr. Ali Al Ma’alam, Officer of Public Relations and Information, represented the university at the gathering. The purpose of the visit was to generate awareness of Dhofar University and its capabilities in teaching engineering in the new College, by exhibiting Dhofar University brochures and other advertisements about the programs offered. One interesting advertisement for the Mechanical Engineering Department was a six -legged omni-directional walking robot, which was presented as an example of what the mechanical engineering students might be producing in projected engineering projects at the University.

Franco- Omani Center Presentation at DU (30 October 2005)

A presentation was held at DU on the importance of learning French and what the French language represents in the modern world. The director of the Franco-Omani Center in Salalah briefed those present about the initial stages of development of the Center in Dhofar Province and the achievements that they had recently made. He also provided information about up and coming courses for who wished to learn French.

Ministries and Government Organizations Hold Football Championship (27 October 2005)

More than 48 football teams, including one from DU, participated in a football championship that was organized by the Department of Sports Affairs in Salalah. The DU football team was given an award for being the most Idealistic Team in the championship.

Visitors from Ministry of Higher Education at Dhofar University
(2 October 2005)

Laila Bint Habib Al Lawatia, and Abdullah bin Salim Al Oweidi, from the Department of Internal Scholarships in the Ministry of Higher Education made a visit to Dhofar University to oversee students, sponsored by the Ministry, who are enrolled at DU during the current academic year.
Ms. Al Lawati pointed out that this visit was purely a routine one, to make sure that sponsored students were attending and didn’t have any problems. The students concerned were given their allowances for September and October in cash. In addition, Ms. Lawati and Mr. Al Oweidi arranged for accounts in a local bank to be opened for the newly sponsored students, so that they could receive their regular monthly allowances through their banks, commencing in November.

Oman Mobile Exhibition at DU (27 – 28 September 2005)


The Oman Company for Mobile Communications (Oman Mobile) held its first exhibition at Dhofar University, which was a great success, due to the large number of students who were very interested in the details about Oman Mobile’s latest offers and services.

Gathering of Muscat Securities Market (26 – 28 September 2005)

Muscat Securities Market, in collaboration with Dhofar University, organized a gathering for university and high school students. The gathering was inaugurated under the auspices of His Excellency Abdullah bin Saif Al Mahrooqi, Deputy Governor of Dhofar Province.
As an integral part of the gathering, a hall was prepared with computers that could exchange securities in the same way as this takes place in the official exchange hall in the Muscat Securities Market. The students played the roles of agents and investors in
performing transactions, according to the correct criteria. The Securities Market also put on an exhibition, where they offered their services and advice to the students.


Al Houti’s Experiences at Al Arabia Channel (27 September 2005)

Mr. Mohammed Al Houti, a well-known reporter working for Al Arabia News Channel visited Dhofar University to meet the students. He gave a lecture in which he spoke about his experiences as a reporter working for such a famous news channel.

President’s Tour (21 September 2005)

“How to Be a Leader of the Future” (5 September 2005)

A training session on "How to be a Leader of the Future" was held at Dhofar University with the collaboration of the Ministry of Defense, Dept. of the Southern Sector. More than 15 officers from the Ministry of Defense participated in the session. The training consolidated cooperation and improved group work on the part of the participating officers.

Orientation Program for Fall Semester 2005 / 2006 (4 – 12 September 2005)

Dhofar University prepared an Orientation Program for new students who were joining the University at the beginning of the Fall Semester of the Academic Year 2005/06. After sitting placement tests to establish where they should begin their studies, students were offered activities and lectures that would familiarize them with the academic programs offered in the three colleges at DU, as well as the services available and systems in place at the University.

DU Holds Exhibition at Khareef Festival
(1 August 2005)

Dhofar University participated in the Khareef Festival by holding an exhibition in which it offered information on programs and courses available at the University. DU also contributed to the Festival in numerous other ways, such as by participating in friendly football matches.

First Dhofar University Batch Graduates
(17 July 2005)

A ceremony was held at the Directorate General of Heritage under the auspices of Dr. Rawya bint Saud al-Busaidiyah, Minister of Higher Education, to mark the graduation of the first batch of Dhofar University students.
Present at the ceremony were ministers, advisors, members of the Majlis Addawlah and Majlis Ash'shura in Dhofar Governorate, the teaching staff, parents and students.
Dr. Hassan Diab, the President of DU, said that 198 students graduated, 49 of whom successfully completed the educational diploma program and the rest business management, computer science and English language.

Symposium for Cooperation between University and Local Community (27 June 2005)


Under the auspices of Sheik Abdullah bin Saif al-Mahrooqi, and in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, Salalah, a symposium was held under the slogan " Toward a Constructive Partnership between DU and Local Community". President of the Chamber, Sheik Naif bin Omar al-Rawas, gave a speech that addressed the role of the Chamber in inhancing the role of private universities. He stressed that Dhofar University represents a long-run investment in sustainable development.

Prof. Hassan Diab, the President of Dhofar University, adressed the audience and indicated that one of the University's concerns is to serve its local community through quality teaching and consultation. This, he said, would contribute to the shaping of creative personality of the people in Oman and especially Salalah.

Three papers were presented in the symposium by Dr. Nimr Eid, Dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration; Mr. Ahmad al-Mashani; Haidar Abdul Ridha al-Lawati, Editor in Chief of Al-Markazi Journal.

DU Gets ICDL (15 June 2005)

The University lately acquired the GCC. The license is given by the largest internationally recognized PC user's certificates. The president out that the certificate testifies that its holder is qualified possesses basic computer skills and information technology

The program consists of seven units; Basic Principles of IT, Use of PC, File Handing and Word Processing, Data Bases, Presentations and Demonstrations, Information and Communication.

In continuation of the cooperation and coordination between DU and SQU, Prof. Hassan Diab, President of the University, received Dr. Ahmend Al Mushikhi, Head of Information Division at SQU. The discussion centered on the possibility of training information students of SQU at DU.

Under Agreement with LOGOS, DU Starts Development of Registration and Human Resources (27 May 2005)

In pursuance of the agreement signed between DU and LOGOS Company a team from the company is visiting the University to set up the network of world-wide data base for the departments of Registration, Human Resources and Financial and Administrative Affairs. The team comprises Ruweida Kharrat , the Head of Admissions and Human Resources Program, Juhad Nimah the Technical Director Siraj Sitrakian, the Head of Accounting and polit Assaf the Project Administrator. Prof. Hassan Diab, the President of Dhofar University indicated that the University is keen to keep to keep up with the latest developments in the field of services provided to students. He indicated that with the existence of the network the students will be able to register their courses online and inquire about everything that is related to their study

Rawyah Al-Busaediyah Meets Presidents and Deans of Private College and Universities (11 May 2005)

HE Dr. Rawyah bint Saud Al-Busaedyah, Minister of Higher Education, met the President and Deans of private universities and colleges in the Sultanate in the head office of the ministry. The meeting dealt with issues of mutual interest and came out with a recommendation for establishing a productive academic environment. Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, expressed to the Minister and H.E., the Under Secretary, that the meeting was a great opportunity for cooperation among the institutes of higher education in the Sultanate, which would lead to the services and facilities at these institutions

Open day Commences (10 April 2005)

In accordance with the University's goal of interaction with the local community and its institutions, and seeking to motivate and perpetuate scientific artistic and human innovation, the University organized an Open Day under the patronage of the Director of Dhofar Municipality. People met on a bright Dhofari morning motivated by creativity, sweet words from poetry and drama, side by side with paintings and science making a harmonized picture that showed the talents and abilities the students possess.

Dhofar University embraced its community with all its spectra. It opened before everybody the genuine gate to the future enameled with lines of modernity. The Open Day was a time we freely expressed ourselves and opened the door to our talents and innovations that were steered by noble aims and goals.


Goals of Open Day
1. Introducing the public to the University and its programs majors and goals and sides of excellence that put the University ahead of other higher education institutions.
2. Promoting artistic literary and scientific creativity by inviting men of letters, and innovators from Oman and outside.
3. Interacting with society in a way that helps students to grasp labor market requirements, mechanisms, and the essential skills to enter it with confidence.
4. Training students to be leaders and innovators and communicate with individuals and institutions outside the University.
5. Demonstrating the students' cultural, artistic, literary, scientific, and social innovations and rewarding brilliant ones.
6. Letting students gain skills in organizing and running activities and exhibitions.


"Dhofar University: Reality and Expectations"
(10 April 2005)


Under the patronage of Mr. Saed bin Ahmed Qatan, the Director of the Directorate of Culture and Heritage, Dhofar and in coordination with the Directorate of Education, DU organized a symposium with the title "Dhofar University: Reality and Expectations". A large number of 12 graders from Salalah attended the symposium. In his speech Prof. Hassan Diab the President of DU. addressed the students and expressed his pleasure to be with them. Then he talked about the two dimensions of the symposium:

First Dimension: Present situation of DU in terms of figures and facts.
Second Dimension: Expectations and ambitions of those in charge of DU.

First Dimension
Prof. Diab indicated that in a few months DU had been able to satisfy all the requirements demanded by the Ministry of Higher Education and those adopted by AUB, the supervising body of DU. This, he stressed, was achieved thanks to the affiliation with AUB which is renowned for its one hundred fifty years of academic originality and the efforts extended by the staff of the university. In terms of figures, the President showed that 130 people work at the University and that the campus consists of four rented complexes that cover an area of twenty three thousand square meters. The facilities of the University Prof. Diab pointed out, include computer labs with the latest technology and a library with around ten thousand titles. The University considers the students to be its' first and foremost asset and the sign of its success and quality. This is why it has put as one of its priorities, graduating students who can compete with their peers in the international labor market. To attain this goal, the University aspires to provide students with an ideal atmosphere that enables them to participate in academic and non academic activities and achieve their independence and be active members in society. To solve the problems that students might face during their academic life the University has started some of the services that lead to this end. It has started centers for student counseling, and educational and professional counseling. Athletic cultural artistic and social activities are also encouraged by DU to enrich the students' mentality and build their personality.

Mission:
Dhofar University strives to achieve excellence in teaching and at a later stage in research in an open learning environment conducive to creativity and innovation in higher education and to the acquisition of cutting edge professional knowledge to be exercised in a spirit of responsibility and community service.

Second Dimension:
In terms of expectations and ambitions Prof .Diab indicated there is a lot that we hope to accomplish before DU can be a representative of the Sultanate in the academic arena and a benchmark of academic and cultural excellence. This is why the University is planning to add new majors that meet the community's needs and contribute to national development As many as fifteen thousands are expected to be studying at DU in the next ten years The University will also invest in scientific research in technology, business management, and humanistic branches of knowledge. There will be increased collaboration with the private sector regarding providing specialized consultations. Finally DU will represent the Sultanate in international conferences and events.

DU Rewards Brilliant Students from Different Grades
(6 April 2005)

Under the patronage of HE Dr. Hammad bin Hamad Al-Ghafiri, Consultant of Employment Ministry, the General Directorate of Education, Dhofar, rewarded brilliant students for the academic year 2004-2005. The ceremony took place in the National Center of Culture and Heritage and was attended by a number of dignitaries, parents of students, and members of the teaching and administrative staff.

Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, stressed that the University's participation in rewarding the students stems from its keenness to be in constant contact and communication with the community. He pointed out that this reflects one of the principles upon which the University was established: interaction with all sections of the community including schools and school students. He pointed out that in less than two months, the University has been able to reach out to most of the schools in the Sultanate and reward good achievers.

DU Signs Agreement with LOGOS (1 April 2005)

Out of care for its students and keenness to upgrade the academic level and quality of programs and services it provides, DU signed a agreement with LOGOS Company to set up the network of an international database to be used by the offices of Admission Registration, Administrative and Financial Affairs, and Human Resources. This will be of great benefit to everybody at DU, especially the students. They will be able to register courses online and inquire about everything that is related to their study. Prof. Hassan Diab, the President of the University, indicated that the network will be a great help with regards to registration and solve a number of problems.

US Embassy Delegation Visits DU ( 27 March 2005)

In continuation of the constant communication between DU and the Ministry of Higher Education a ministerial delegation comprised of Dr. Khamis Al Bloushi the General Director of Private Colleges. Khalifa bin Nasir Al Wahibi, Head of the Supervision and Accreditation office, and Abdul Aziz Eisa Zabanout, Head of Information and Licensing made a visit to DU. The delegation met with Prof. Hassan DiaB, Acting President of the University and a number of academic and administrative staff members. They also met some of the students to be acquainted with their study and academic life and to listen to their ideas and suggestions. After that the delegation visited the colleges and centers of the University.

DU Participates in Al-Sahwa School Exhibition, Muscat (1 March 2005)

Keen to acquaint the public with its programs, DU took part in the exhibition of university future majors and programs organized by Al-Sahwa School. Dr. Mufeed Al-Abdullah and Mr. Ali Al-Muallim represented the University in the event. Delegations from US, British, New Zealand, and Australian universities also participated.

The exhibition was a good opportunity for 11th and 12th graders and their parents to be acquainted with higher education and be in close contact with universities and colleges to form a complete idea about conditions of application, fees, and academic programs provided by each institution.

Under Secretary of Higher Education Chairs Meeting with Presidents and Deans of Private Colleges and Universities in the Sultanate (17 February 2005)

HE Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammad Al-Sarimi, the Under Secretary of Higher Education met with Presidents and Deans of private colleges and universities in Nizwa Hall, Sheraton. Transparency and flexibility marked the meeting which came out with a group of recommendations, such as taking care of orienting new students for the first two semesters as regards the programs provided and supplying them with the required supervision. The meeting also postulated that each institution should have its own guide in both Arabic and English in order to give the students the chance to have a full idea about majors and academic programs.


DU's Delegation Visits Officials in Ministry of Education (21 February 2005)

A DU delegation consisting of Dr. Mufeed Al-Abdullah, Acting Dean of CAAS, and Mr. Ali Al-Muallim, Officer of Public Relations, paid a visit to the Ministry of Education. They were received by a group of officials at the ministry. The delegation made a presentation on the University and the programs it provides. The new plan to developing education in the Sultanate was discussed. After that, the delegation briefed the officials of DU's plan to visit public secondary schools of the Sultanate to acquaint 12th graders with the University.

Dr. Mustafa (14 February 2005 )

15 February 2005 saw the third in this series. This presenter on this occasion was Dr. Mustafa Tajuddin who brought his considerable knowledge and expertise to bear on his chosen topic "Critical Thinking, Theory and Practice". As well as presenting a theoretical stance based on the contextual nature of reality, Dr. Mustafa encouraged teachers to engage with their students in critical dialogue and to gear their teaching and assessment towards nurturing the skill of critical thinking.

Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, received Prof. Mohammed Al-Sabbarini, President of Yarmouk University, Jordan, in his visit to DU from February 9-14, 2005. Some issues related to the cooperation between the two universities were discussed.

Prof. Diab also gave a reception on the honor of the guest. A number of academic and administrative staff members attended the reception.

Extraordinary Assembly of DU Decides to Purchase NCST and Increase Number of Trustees to 15.
(3 February 2005)


In a meeting chaired by HE Mistihil Rakhyut, and attended by members of the directing council, representatives of General Committee of the Stock Exchange, delegates from the auditing office, and a number of contributors, it was decided to purchase the assets of NCST and increase the number of trustees to 15. The three new members were to be of academic experience representing different colleges and schools. This was agreed upon unanimously by the members of the assembly.

During the meeting, the chairman pointed out to the advances that had been achieved by DU, though it hadn't finished its first year. He also predicted that the University would achieve academic excellence and quality through cooperation with AUB. This, he indicated, showed itself in the improvement in the quality of academic and administrative staff.

Dean of Oman Tourism & Hospitality Academy at DU
(25 January 2005)

Dr. Nimr Eid, the Vice President of DU, received Dr. Bernhard Klefasz, the Dean of the Oman Tourism & Hospitality Academy. The meeting dealt with the possibility of cooperation between the two institutions. After that, DU's trophy was presented to the guest.

President Receives Handicapped Student
(10 January 2005)

Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, received Abdullah Awadh Baqwir, the first handicapped student at DU. He discussed with him his studies and difficulties he had due to his disability. Prof. Diab promised the student to consider his needs and provide necessary facilities to handicapped students.

Abdullah is studying at the College of Commerce. He indicated that, despite being handicapped, he was resolved to continue his studies and serve his country. He also pointed out that he was proud to be one of the students at the first university in Dhofar.

President Visits Examination Rooms (4 January 2005)

Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, visited examination rooms in the CAAS, College of Business and Sciences, and College of Engineering. He was escorted by Dr. Ahmad Ukasha, the Registrar of DU, deans of colleges, and a number of staff members. Prof. Diab asked some of the students about their impressions and attitudes to the exams. 1350 did the exams that commenced on January 4, 2005

Second Orientation Week of DU (29 December 2004)

DU organized an orientation program to acquaint new students with the programs and degrees provided by the University, and conditions of application. After that, the new students did the placement test that covered skills of English, Arabic, Math, and Computer Science.

Parliamentary Sub-committee at DU
(25 December 2004)

A parliamentary sub-committee established by the Educational and Cultural committee of Parliament made a field trip to Dhofar Province as a part of its survey of private universities and colleges in the Sultanate.

The sub-committee met with Prof. Saed Al-Fakahani, the Vice President, and a number of officials of the University. Discussion centered on the conditions of private universities and facilities and services provided to the students


Dr. McDevitt's Presentation (28 December 2004)

A Seminar was held on Tuesday 28 December 2004. The presenter was Dr Barbara McDevitt and she addressed the area of Critical Methodology. She presented an overview of three major methodological approaches to language teaching and invited teachers and academics to engage with newer insights from the social sciences, philosophy and linguistics in order to make informed decisions regarding their own teaching situations

Dr. Mustafa Tajuddin, Head of Languages and Translation department, participated in an international conference on Philosophy and Resistance, organized by the Egyptian Association of Philosophy, Cairo, 20-22 December 2004. He presented a paper on: "Linguistic Policies and the Issue of Language Hegemony".

In a Visit to DU Delegation of Ministry of Higher Education Discusses Future Roles of Colleges of Education (13 December 2004 )

Dr. Hassan Diab, acting President of the University, met a delegation of the Ministry of Higher Education, which included Mr. Hamad Al-Alawi, General Director of the Colleges of Education and members of a professional team from New Zealand.
The visit was in connection with the project of transforming some of the Colleges of Education in the Sultanate into scientific ones. The meeting discussed the start of DU with the ministerial directive (2004/5) after integrating the National College of Science and Technology into DU.
The meeting addressed the majors existing at DU (English language and arts and translation, computing, educational diploma, accounting, finance, management, marketing, MIT, and graphic design). Future majors (Education, Math, Chemistry, and Physics at the CAAS, and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Communications, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the College of Engineering) were also discussed at the meeting.
Dr. Hassan briefed the attendants on degrees awarded by DU. He indicated that students can apply for a bachelors degree that requires four years of study, the first two of which aim at providing the students with a general academic background. It is based on the American system of credit hours and adopts English as the medium of instruction. The President also explained that DU freshmen are required to attend the Orientation Program that qualifies them to join university courses. Finally, Dr. Diab pointed out that DU provides an Associate Diploma for those who complete the first two years of study at the Colleges of Administration and Engineering

University's Football Team Beaten by Dhofar Club in Its First Friendly Match (8 December 2004)


As part of activating student activities and interacting with the community, the University football team played its first friendly match with Dhofar club, the winner of HM Sultan Qaboos's Cup. The match was attended by Dr. Hassan Diab, President of the University and a number of academic and administrative staff as well as students. The team's coach and supervisor of sports activities at the University, Mr. Salim Kashoob, indicated that the team had been set up only a short time before the match to take part in the student's gathering that had been held at Sultan Qaboos University. He stressed that the team would improve a lot through playing more friendly matches with some local teams and clubs. He also demonstrated that Dhofar club was one of the strong clubs in the Sultanate that witnessed an era of prosperity especially after winning HM Sultan Qaboos's Cup. He extended his appreciation of the President attending the match, which encouraged the players to do their best

Dr. Olagboyega Presentation (7 December 2004)

On Tuesday December 7, a presentation was given by Dr. Kola Olagboyega to members of the academic staff of Dhofar University as well as colleagues from the College of Technology and Teachers College in Salalah. The theme of the presentation was "Action Research". Dr.Olagboyega outlined the theory behind this type of research which is used to find solutions to problems within schools and colleges. He also gave some examples of action research drawn from his own experience. A lively discussion ensued. Following the presentation participants were invited to meet and share their views over refreshments kindly provided by the university.

DU Takes Part in First Student Gathering of Universities and Higher Education Institutions

DU took part in the first student gathering of universities and higher education institutions held at Sultan Qaboos University from December 1-8, 2004. Sports and cultural committees represented DU in the event.

The delegation was headed by Wathiqa Abdullah Beit Saed and comprised of students Alawi Ahmad Al-Ghassani, Saed Muhsin Al-Mashali, Salih Al-Hdeifi, Laila Mubarak Al-Shahri, Sawsan Mubarak Al-Shahri, and Lamia Saed Beit Ardhin.

The event contained a group of seminars and activities that contributed to the athletic and cultural life of the participants and enriched communication among students from different institutions of higher education.


Zaid Zabanout Attends Graduation Ceremony
(December 2004)

Zaid Ahmed Zabanout left for the UK in December 2004 to attend his graduation ceremony. Zabnout graduated from Bradford University with an MsC in Computing and Performance Engineering.

Ramadan Six-team Football Tournament Final under Patronage of President (8 November 2004)

Continuing its activities, the Sports Committee of the University organized, during Ramadan, a football tournament in the Salalah Airbase stadium. Fourteen teams took part. They were divided into four groups. All the matches witnessed remarkable attendance of students and public, which heightened enthusiasm. Four teams, Inter, Deportivu, Naht, and Tango, made it to the finals. The third position was Tango's. The final match, between Deportivu and Inter, was under the patronage of the president, Prof. Hassan Diab. Deportivu beat Inter and won the title.

A lot of people attended the match including University employees and base officers and soldiers.

After the match, Prof. Diab awarded trophies and medals to the winning teams. Gifts were also presented to the Security Commander of the base and the chief officer of the Wireless Division in recognition of the services and facilities they rendered to make the tournament a big success.

Workshop of English Teaching Methodologies

Out of DU's belief in communicating with the staff and keeping abreast of the latest developments in instructional theories and research, a workshop was conducted from October 30-November 02, 2004 for the English language instructors. The workshop was offered by Prof. Qasim Shaaban and Prof. Ghazi Ghaith from AUB.

Iftar (Ramadan Dinner) for Academic and Administrative Staff (30 October 2004)

Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, hosted an Iftar for the academic and administrative staff of DU on October 30, 2004. Prof. Qasim Shaaban and Prof. Ghazi Ghaith, from AUB, were present.

President of DU: University to Be a Significant Axis in Oman's New Academic Map.(25 September 2004)

Studies commenced at DU on September 1st, 2004. New students will attend the Orientation Program or go to majors depending on their results in the placement test administered by the University. Commenting on this historic moment in the life of Dhofar, Prof. Hassan Diab, Acting President of DU, indicated that the University has completed its preparations to receive the new students in terms of recruiting new staff and making available all the necessary facilities like new buildings and equipment. With regard to the Orientation Program, he pointed out that the aim is to prepare the new students to the majors, and that the program lasts for a semester or a year depending on their achievements in the English, Math, IT, and Arabic placements tests designed by the University. English is emphasized during this stage, since it is the medium of instruction throughout the four or five years of study at the University.

The president showed that DU has completed arrangements for receiving the new students and that the facilities of the National College of Science and Technology would be used temporarily till the new campus is finished.
Regarding decision making at the University, he pointed out that the University has a council of trustees that are responsible for setting general policy, while AUB is in charge of academic programs, administration, and technical support till 2010.

The president emphasized the point that DU is not profit-oriented. "Its first and foremost goal is excellence as an institute of higher education that observes international standards and takes into consideration present and future needs of the public", he said. This, he pointed out, is evident from its keenness to provide a distinguished educational environment that is unique in its staff, location, and equipment.

The president indicated that the academic program of DU consists of four years of study. The first two provide students with a general academic background. These are followed by two years of specialized study.

Regarding the Orientation Program at Dhofar University, the President gave the following description. "The Orientation Program at Dhofar University is designed for students who are not prepared enough to join the University's courses. This program is a two-semester program designed to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills in English, Arabic, Study Skills, Computer Sciences, and Mathematics.
Incoming students maybe required to spend either one or two semesters in the Orientation Program depending on their academic level at secondary school and their achievement in the placement tests administered by Dhofar University. This program offers incoming students with low proficiency in English an intensive training course whose purpose is to help them attain a level of competence in reading, writing, communication and study skills that would make it possible for them to pursue their studies in the major of their choice through the medium of English."

Orientation Symposium under Patronage of Qatabi
(17 August 2004)

Abdul Aziz Al-Rawas said, "Aiming at graduating qualified graduates through open educational environment and being innovation-oriented". The President of the University said, "The University not profit-oriented, but aims at serving the community and providing it with well-trained and qualified graduates"

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Ali Al-Qatabi, Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar, DU organized an orientation symposium. It commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Then, His Highness Abdul Aziz Al-Rawas, the Sultan's Councilor for Cultural Affairs and member of DU's Council of Trustees, gave a speech in which he expressed the council's appreciation of the Sultan's support of DU, which had a great role in bringing the University into being.

He indicated that in implementation of HM Sultan Qaboos's teachings and directions that stress education for all Omanis when he said, "We will teach our citizens even under tress", the idea of opening a non-profit university that aimed at achieving excellence of teaching in Dhofar started to crystallize in the brains of ambitious people from the governorate. After a thorough search, a decision was taken to refer to the AUB for support. This was because of the AUB's reputation for academic originality and excellence.

After that, he extended his congratulations to the Omani people for the establishment of this university. He indicated that the University would be of great benefit to the youth of Oman, and specifically Dhofar.

After that, Dr. George Najar, Vice President for External and Regional Programs at the AUB, made his speech. He referred to the reasons why DU was established and the cooperation between it and AUB. He gave a brief description of the new university in terms of academic programs, teaching staff, fees, and facilities.

Next, Prof. Hassan Diab, the Acting President of DU, talked about the University. He indicated that it is not profit-oriented, and aims at serving the local community by providing its people with the skills they need in their life. He stressed that one of the major goals of the trustees is to bring DU to the level of reputed international universities.

Appreciating HM the Sultan' Support to Bring DU to Light Establishing Council of DU Meets to Approve First DU Administrative Council (5 August 2004)
His Highness Yousuf bi Alawi bin Abdullah chaired a meeting of the establishing council of DU yesterday evening at the National College of Science and Technology, Salalah. At the beginning, His Highness expressed his and members of the council's appreciation and gratitude of HM Sultan Qaboos's care and constant support of the DU project, which played the greatest role in crystallizing the project and making it see light. He also appreciated the efforts extended by members of work committees and teams, which led to organizing the meeting. DU was decided to commence the next academic year, 2004/2005.
DU Administrative Council
One of the decisions taken by the founding council of DU is the establishment of an administrative council of DU, in implementation of the ministerial directive of the Ministry of Higher Education (2004/5). This council is to be in charge of running the University. The council is to comprise His Highness Abdul Alim bin Mistiheil Rakhiout, His Highness Ahmad bin Abdullah Mqeibil, Dr. Anwar bin Mohammad Al-Rawas, Mohammad bin Yousuf bin Alawi, Sheikh Salim bin Abdullah Al-Rawas, Sheikh Bakhit bin Salim Ali Al-Mashani, and Omar bin Ahmad bin Abdullah Al-Sheikh.
First Meeting of Administrative Council After that, the first meeting of the administrative council of DU was held to thoroughly discuss essential points with regards to running the University. The first point on the agenda was to elect a chairman of the council. Unanimously, His Highness Abdul Alim bin Mistiheil Rakhiout was elected chairman, and His Highness Ahmad bin Abdullah Mqeibil vice chairman.

HE Dr. Rawyiah bintSaud Al-Busaidyiah, Minister of Higher Education, issued, on July 26, 2004, a decree regarding the commencement of studies at DU in the academic year 2004-2005.

Ministrial Decree to Establish DU
(27 January 2004)

HE Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al-Munthiri, Minister of State and former Minister of Higher Education, issued a decree to establish Dhofar University on January 27, 2004. The University is to abide by the law of Omani private universities and have its identity. It will be represented by its President. The head office is to be located in Salalah. The University will have three colleges; College of Arts and Applied Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Commerce and Administrative Sciences as well as centers of scientific research.

Agreement of Merger between DU and NCST
(27 December 2003)

A merger agreement was signed in Salalah on December 27, 2003 between Dhofar University, represented by HE Sheikh Mistihil bin Ahmad Al-Mashani (Chairman of DU's board of trustees), and the National College of Science and Technology, represented by Sheikh Salim bin Mubarak Al-Shanfari (Chairman of NCST's board of trustees).

DU Signs Agreement of Cooperation with AUB
(8 September 2003)

The first steps of study at DU started with an agreement of scientific cooperation with AUB for seven years. DU was represented by HE Sheikh Mistihil bin Ahmad Al- Mashani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The signing ceremony was attended by a number of ministers, consultants, and members of DU committees.
HE Sheikh Mistihil bin Ahmad Al-Mashani gave a speech in which he stressed the importance of establishing the University in Dhofar. He indicated that it would be a great academic achievement that will serve the people of Oman in general and Dhofar in particular.
He also pointed out that the decision of cooperating with AUB came after thorough consideration of the choices at hand. AUB was chosen because of its history of excellence and originality. This meant that the start would be sound and that DU would be on the right road to achieving its goals.

Meeting of December 22, 1999

In implementation of HM the Sultan's policy of encouraging private investment in higher education, which contributes to the well being of the Omani people, a group of enthusiastic people from various sections of the society called for an establishing meeting. The meeting was held in Haffa House Hotel, Ruwi on December 22, 1999. The meeting resulted in the election of two committees. The first was consultative to provide moral and material support for the DU. The other was an establishing one to plan and supervise the project, and to coordinate with the first committee, until the Boards of Trustees and University were established

HM. Sultan Qaboos bin Saeed issued the royal decree (41/1994) regarding the establishment of private colleges and high institutes as follows

We Qaboos Bin Saeed, Sultanate of Oman:
After examining the state's basic law mentioned in the royal decree (101/96) and the royal decree (15/94) regarding the specializations of the Ministry of Higher Education the royal decree (65/98) regarding the establishment of the Board of Higher Education and seeking the public well being.

Article 1. With a decree issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and taking the approval of the Board of Higher Education, private colleges and high institutes can be established to teach one or more scientific or technical specializations after secondary school. This should take into consideration development plans in the Sultanate and the needs of the labor market. These institutions are to be under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education.

Article 2. The Minister of Higher Education is to issue the necessary laws for establishing the aforementioned institutions with the approval of the Board of Higher Education

HM Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed issued a Royal Decree (41/99) regarding the law of private universities in the Sultanate as follows:

We, Qaboos bin Saeed, Sultanate of Oman,
after examining the state's basic law mentioned in royal decree (101/96) and the royal decree (65/98) regarding the establishment of the Board of Higher Education and seeking the public well being.
Article 1. The private universities are to comply with the respective law.
Article 2. Everything that violates or contradicts the respective law is to be considered null.
Article 3. After taking the approval of the Board of Higher Education, the Minister of Higher Education is to issue executive bylaws implementing the above-mentioned articles.
