HSBC Team Visits DU
A team from HSBC Bank visited Dhofar University on Sunday, November 26th to give a presentation to staff and faculty on new procedures at HSBC and to make special offers suitable for either local or expatriate staff or faculty members holding accounts at the bank. Mr. Joe Chung, the Personal Financial Services Manager, was accompanied on his visit by Fatima Salman, from Customer Services Department, and Abdullah Al Hinai and Fahad Rakah, both Direct Sales Representatives. His presentation was of great interest to both present customers and those considering switching their accounts to HSBC, since the bank is not only making special offers on all types of loans, but in investments, both local and off-shore, as well as NRI services. Mr. Chung outlined new packages of benefits exclusively available to those working at DU, such as lower international transfer rates, and discounted interest rates. Before all those present were served refreshments, the university staff members were given an opportunity to ask the team for further details on the new offers. For those who often travel internationally such as academics, HSBC is often the bank of choice, since it is one of the largest banking groups in the world and has services that compete with all other international banks.
Dhofar University Celebrates National Day
The 36th National Day celebrations took place at Dhofar University’s
Ibn Rushd Hall, in an air of excitement and pride, kick-started by a group
of local dancers, who made their way around the campus early in the morning,
entertaining faculty and students with their drumming and dancing. Guests
eventually made their way to the theater, where the official program was
to be held. Dr. Nimr Eid, Act’g President, Assistant President for
Students Affairs, Dr.Ahmed Al Maasheni, Ass’t President for Student
Affairs, Deans of the various Colleges, and faculty and staff, as well as
students and invited guests filled the theater to overflowing. Many students
were left standing, but despite that, ended up staying for the whole performance.
The party began with the National Anthem, followed by a reading from the
Holy Qur’an, and a speech by Dr. Ahmed Al Maasheni, who thanked Bank
Dhofar for sponsoring the party, and all those who had gone to so much trouble
to organize the many events, including Mubarak Al Muqaddam, Ahmed Ma’aroof,
Salim Al Hafeedh, support staff, and the many students involved in cultural
activities.
A particularly moving part of the celebration was a combined play/film about
the development of education in the Sultanate from the days before the rule
of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, until the present day. It was particularly
special because of the wonderful review, on film, of His Majesty’s
rule and the changes he has brought about in the whole country, from when
he came to power as a very young man, through the 36 years of his rule. Many
of the students could remember events, portrayed in the film, from the years
while they were growing up, and this made it all the more relevant and poignant.
They realized the true significance of His Majesty’s words at the beginning
of the Omani renaissance, when he told his citizens "The most important
thing is education, we will teach our children even in the shade of a tree…”

Under the auspices of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammad Bin Ali Al Qatabi,
the Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar, Mr. Magdi B. El Din, Senior
Lecturer in Graphic Design in the College of Engineering at Dhofar University
will be launching his first exhibition in the Sultanate, of oil and digital
paintings on Thursday the 16th of November, 2006, at six o’clock in

in Graphic Design, in 1977. He worked in Germany, Kuwait and Egypt, before
joining Dhofar University in 2005. Mr. El Din has won many awards, the most

The present exhibition is a collection of previous as well as recent works,
mainly portraits, sketches of cars and still-life, in both oil and digital
painting. He uses professional painting software that is specifically for
professional artists. Mr. El Din says that “The digital experience
is very rich and rewarding; one can use the digitizer to draw and paint,
control line thicknesses, color opacity and natural hand fervor. All those
feelings are transferred to the drawing surface on the computer screen. One
has the variety of using pencil drawing, pastel colors, oils and water colors.
In every way it is a very rich experiment, with the computer as a new and
interesting medium and not an alternative to traditional painting and drawing”.
Mr. El Din has held 13 exhibitions in photography, painting and carving in
Egypt, Germany, Italy, Kuwait and Tunisia.

University organized
a lecture entitled “Trading Law and E-Commerce” presented by His Excellency
Said Al Shahri, Head of the Legal Committee of the Majlis As’Shura.
At the beginning
of the lecture,
the speaker
made it clear
what was
meant by
trading law
with regards
to e-commerce: “This
law will
make sending
e-mails easier
and remove
all the obstacles
to e-commerce.
One will
be able to
transfer
e-documents
to government
institutions
safely. The
law decreases
the opportunity
for falsification
of emails
and deception
by those
dealing with
each other
through e-commerce.”
He described the needs for such a law and said that it would become a necessity
for the Omani Digital Community, especially due to the increased use of information
technology and communications to and among commercial establishments.

of them as being Oman Mobile.
Dhofar University Participates in 1st World Congress on The Power of Language
(22 – 25
May 2006 )
Dr.
Mufeed Al-Abdullah,
Associate Professor
in the Department
of Languages
at Dhofar University
participated
in ‘1st
World Congress on The Power of Language: Theory, Practice, and Development’,
which took place in Thailand. He presented a paper on ‘Shakespeare's
Language Strategies in his Play, Hamlet’.
The paper
argues
that
in numerous
places
in his
canon,
Shakespeare
uses
language
for purposes
other
than
normal
human
communication.
In Julius
Caesar,
for instance,
language
is used,
among
other
things,
as a
means
of human
manipulation
and a
tool
for invoking
and revoking
action;
in Macbeth,
for hiding
reality;
in the
histories,
for showing
class
distinction.
He even
casts
doubts
in Othello
about
the adequacy
of verbal
language
as a
means
of communication.
The paper
discusses
Shakespeare’s
treatment
of language
in Hamlet
and shows
the multiplicity
of his
strategies
and the
creativity
of the
methods
he introduces
in the
play.
The playwright
employs
language
for characterization,
hiding
identity,
misleading
and manipulating
others,
revealing
character
morality,
and self-assertion.
In fact,
confrontations
in the
play
are marked
by distinct
types
of language.
Language
in Hamlet
functions
as the
attire
for hidden
human
reality.

to Gilgamesh’s journeys in the Babylonian epic poem c. 2000 B.C.E.,
Ulysses’ wanderings from the 13th century B.C.E. and the historical
works of Herodotus, born 485 B.C.E.; his The Histories begins Herodotus of
