Overview

The Research Council(TRC) is Oman’s exclusive research funding body and leader of research development in the country. TRC serves as a focal point and hub dedicated to promoting and supporting research, scientific enquiry, and innovation in the Sultanate of Oman. At the heart of our work is nurturing research talent to power innovation and create economic benefit for our national prosperity.

Established in June 2005, TRC has been founded by Royal Decree No. 54/2005 under the chairmanship of His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al-Said, adviser to His Majesty the Sultan. This was notably followed in 2010 by Royal Decree No.30/2010 with TRC set to lead the way in drawing up a national plan for scientific research in the Sultanate.

As a policy-making body and funding agency, TRC encourages the promotion and application of research, innovation and science to create value that serves business, markets and the wider needs of society. It is our belief that research conducted in Oman should further the public good with commitment to the spread and transfer of knowledge. (Source:TRC website:www.trc.gov.om)

DU Grant Applications

Currently, DU has 11 funded projects (including faculty and student projects) funded by TRC.

Open Research Grant (ORG)

Due to the economic condition of the country, TRC froze all grants during the last quarter of AY 2015-16. The funding for all ongoing projects was also stopped by TRC until the availability of funds. The applications were reopened at the beginning of the AY 2016-17 and the message was conveyed to all faculty members to submit new applications for Open Research Grant (ORG).

In the beginning of June, 2017, TRC approved funds as per the new guidelines for the second year for the ORG project by Dr. Shafique Chaudhry, that was approved in January, 2016 while the funds for year 1 were received in December, 2016. In the end of June, TRC released funds for the ORG project by Dr. Fethi Abbassi while the request for extension for Dr. Dekdouk’s ORG project was approved in October, 2017. The EcoHouse project was approved for extension in November, 2017. No new projects were approved during current AY. Following are the details of all ORG grants:

Best FURAP Award

All FURAP project holders from FURAP Call #4 applied for the “FURAP Award” organized by the TRC that was awarded during the 3rd Annual Research Forum (ARF) held in Muscat on 10th December, 2017. One of the FURAP Project from DU won the “Best FURAP Award” in ICT sector from all across Oman. The students attended the ARF event in Sheraton and collected their award. The details of the project are tabulated via Table 3 below.

Biodiversity Research Chair

DU submitted the proposal for the Research Chair in biodiversity focusing on Frankincense and medicinal plants to the TRC during AY 2013-14. After initial evaluation, the updated proposal was resubmitted to TRC in March, 2015. This research chair will develop new research projects and programs and will increase research capacity in the field of biodiversity and medicinal plants. Total modified proposed Budget for the Research Chair is 5,187,000 R.O as shown in table 3 below.
