Third GenoBusiness Economic Forum

Salalah, November 2 / University Media / The Third GenoBusiness Economic Forum, organized by the Oman Animal and Plant Genetic Resources Centre (Mawarid) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, in collaboration with Dhofar University, took place on November 2, 2025, at Rotana Resort Salalah.

The event was inaugurated by Her Excellency Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al-Mahrooqiah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Attendees included researchers, experts, and entrepreneurs from Oman, as well as delegations from the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and South Africa.

Over the course of two days, the Forum seeks to highlight the economic importance of Omani genetic resources and emphasize the crucial role of biodiversity in fostering innovation and growth within nature-based industries. It serves as a platform, both nationally and internationally, to showcase the latest scientific and economic advancements in genetic resources, as well as explore opportunities to leverage Omani biodiversity for globally competitive products in areas such as bio-industries, health, nutrition, cosmetics, perfumes, and eco-tourism.

Najaah bint Mohammed Al Rashdiah, Director General of the Innovation Center at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, delivered an address emphasizing the Forum’s alignment with Oman’s 2040 vision, prioritizing innovation and the knowledge economy for national development. She underscored the potential for genetic resources to unlock economic value, facilitate the creation of new start-ups, and drive industrial growth in Oman.

Dr. Mohammed bin Nasser Al Yahyaei, Director of the Oman Animal and Plant Genetic Resources Centre (Mawarid), highlighted the Forum’s focus on cultivating national and international partnerships to transform Omani genetic resources into sustainable and economically viable products. He emphasized Oman’s global competitiveness in this field through innovative practices.

The opening ceremony honored Dr. Shahina Ghadhanfar for her contributions to the conservation and study of Omani plant diversity. Additionally, experts from the Netherlands presented insights on entrepreneurship and innovation in their session titled “From Idea to Market.”

The Forum featured panel discussions on converting Omani biodiversity into economically beneficial products within the realms of health, food, and innovation. An exhibition showcased entrepreneurial projects utilizing local genetic resources, demonstrating the potential for economic growth and innovation.

On the second day, the Forum delved into the aromatic identity and innovative products inspired by Omani plants, underscoring the role of eco-tourism and traditional knowledge in supporting sustainable industries and investment opportunities.
