Dhofar University Marks World Diabetes Day with Awareness Event

The College of Medicine at Dhofar University has launched its first health awareness event, “Diabetes… The Disease of the Century,” in conjunction with World Diabetes Day. The initiative aimed to highlight the seriousness of diabetes, prevention strategies, and ways to manage its complications.

The program featured a panel discussion with Dr. Ahmed Salem Qaitoon, endocrinologist and director of Sultan Qaboos Hospital. He explained the causes of diabetes, early detection methods, and treatment approaches, noting its prevalence as a major endocrine disorder. Dr. Qaitoon outlined key symptoms, diagnostic tools such as blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin tests, and potential complications including cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, and diabetic foot problems.

Audience members actively engaged with questions on prevention, control, and the latest medical recommendations. The lecture was followed by interactive activities, including blood sugar testing stations, a nutrition education corner, and an exhibition of posters and models illustrating the disease and its prevention.

The event underscored Dhofar University’s commitment to advancing public health awareness and fostering a culture of medical education within its community.
