Dhofar University Hosts Panel on Food Security and Sustainability

On 25 May, the Community Service and Continuing Education Center at Dhofar University organized a panel discussion titled “Food Security: Challenges and Solutions for a Sustainable Future.” The event brought together a distinguished group of experts and stakeholders engaged in food security and sustainability.

The session featured Mr. Saleh bin Mohammed Al Shanfari, consultant and food security expert, Chairman of the Food Security Committee at the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and recipient of the Royal Commendation in food security and environmental fields. He was joined by Ms. Mona Jaboob, researcher in food security and Oman’s Digital Transformation Ambassador, and Dr. Salim Al Kathiri, Senior Media Specialist at the General Directorate for Consumer Protection. The discussion was moderated by writer and journalist Mohammed bin Omar Al Marhoon.

Key topics explored included the distinction between food security and self-sufficiency, the strategic importance of the Najd region in supporting Oman’s Vision 2040, the role of individuals and institutions in strengthening food security, and the main challenges facing the sector. Proposed solutions for sustainability and self-sufficiency were also presented. Audience members actively contributed through questions and insights, and commemorative gifts were offered to the participants.

This initiative reflects Dhofar University’s commitment to raising awareness of strategic development issues, fostering dialogue, and promoting the exchange of expertise. By addressing environmental and food security concerns, the University continues to support sustainable development in the Sultanate of Oman.
