About Risk Management System

Dhofar University’s Risk Management System is a pivotal initiative to safeguard the university’s mission of delivering outstanding education, fostering community engagement, advancing knowledge, and aligning with Oman’s Vision 2040. The risk management system operates following the Risk Management Policy (DU-AD-002 Risk Management Policy), which provides a structured framework to ensure the institution’s resilience and alignment with its vision, mission, and objectives. The policy guides the identification, assessment, and prioritization of the risks across all academic and non-academic units, fostering a proactive approach to risk prevention and mitigation. Through a coordinated system, risk centres maintain detailed risk registers and develop tailored strategies to address potential challenges, ensuring effective resource utilization and the protection of the university’s reputation, operations, and community well-being. Regular reviews and collaborative efforts across departments enhance the system’s effectiveness, supporting a secure and thriving academic environment.

The HRD performs the following functions in general:

The DU Risk Management System is the cornerstone of commitment, ensuring the safety, resilience, and success of the students, staff, and stakeholders by proactively identifying risk, assessing risk, and mitigating across all aspects of university life. The approach to risk management is comprehensive and collaborative, drawing on insights from 7 academic risk centres, including colleges and departments, and 15 non-academic risk centres, encompassing specialized units across the university. By working closely with university leadership and staff, challenges are addressed proactively, tailoring best practices to the unique context of Dhofar University. This ensures the protection of resources, the preservation of reputation, and the well-being of the university community.

Dhofar University established the Risk Management Office (RMO) to proactively address challenges and ensure a resilient future for the university community. This strategic initiative reflects the university’s commitment to excellence and a forward-thinking approach to fostering a secure and thriving academic environment in alignment with Oman’s Vision 2040.

The RMO is dedicated to safeguarding Dhofar University’s vision, mission, and objectives by systematically identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks across all academic and non-academic units. These risks include environmental challenges, equipment or facility failures, incidents involving staff or students, threats to reputation, financial stability, competition, and unforeseen events. The RMO maintains comprehensive risk registers and develops tailored strategies to prevent and mitigate potential impacts, optimizing the university’s financial, human, and physical resources.

The system integrates risk discussions into strategic deliberations, identifying inter-relations of risk factors across the university’s activities. The RMO focuses on six key risk areas:

  • Compliance Risk: Risks from non-compliance with Oman’s laws, regulations, or university policies.
  • Financial Risk: Risks from financial management or budgeting decisions leading to potential losses.
  • Operational Risk: Risks affecting daily operations, including information security.
  • Human Resources Risk: Risks related to recruitment, training, and retention of staff.
  • Reputation Risk: Risks to the university’s reputation as a leading institution in Oman.
