Student Counseling Center organizes a Counseling Week from December 3 to December 7, 2023

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) at Dhofar University organized a guidance week entitled “With guidance we rise,” which includes many workshops, awareness lectures, and an awareness exhibition on moral values and psychoactive substances in the period from December 3 to December 7, 2023.

The activities of the Counseling Week began on Sunday, December 3, with the opening of an awareness-raising exhibition entitled (No to Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) under the generous patronage of the Honorable Professor Amer bin Ali Al-Rawas, Vice Chancellor of the University, and in the presence of a large number of academic and administrative staff and students of Dhofar University.

A large number of university students participated in the awareness exhibition, including master’s students in psychological counseling, as well as social work students and counseling competition students from various specialties at the university. From external entities, the Royal Oman Police/Narcotics Control Department, the General Directorate of Social Development in Dhofar Governorate, and the General Directorate of Health, the General Directorate of Education in Dhofar Governorate, the General Directorate of Endowments and Religious Affairs in Dhofar Governorate, and a large number of schools in Dhofar Governorate, including Khalid bin Al-Walid School, Al-Raya School, Al-Saeediyya School, Al-Wadi School, Manbaa Al-Fikr School, and Salalah Al-Sharqiyah School participated in the awareness exhibition. The exhibition included many awareness-raising pictures and posters about moral values as well as the harms of drugs and psychotropic substances.

The activities continued on Monday, December 4, with a lecture presented by Dr. Hazem Abu Al-Hamad Hamdi, Assistant Professor of Jurisprudence and Sharia at the College of Law, entitled “Instilling Moral Values in Youth,” in which he talked about how to build a system of moral values that guide behavior and their impact on building nations and the cohesion of society, and among the values that a Young people must possess like honesty, honesty, integrity, tolerance, fairness, respect, preserving the system of moral values, and staying away from deviation and abnormality such as homosexuality and others.

On December 5, the Center organized an awareness-raising campaign for university students in the classrooms, where many awareness brochures and brochures were distributed to the university students, including many tips and instructions about moral values, addiction, and psychotropic substances. Many university students participated in it and had an effective impact on the souls of the students.

On Wednesday, December 6, there was a dialogue session entitled No to Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, moderated by Dr. Mosleh Al-Majali, Associate Professor of Psychological Counseling at the University, and in the presence of the participants who spoke in the dialogue session, starting with Professor Nasser Abdelrasheed, Director of the Student Counseling Center at the University, who spoke about the psychological impact of drugs and psychotropic substances on Youth and methods of treatment, and Captain Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Farsi from the Royal Oman Police, Narcotics Control Department, talked about the types of drugs, methods of taking them, and how to fight them and limit their spread. Dr. Muhammad bin Bakhit Al Shahri, the religious preacher from the General Directorate of Endowments and Religious Affairs, spoke about the awareness programs and efforts made by the Directorate. The Endowment advises and guides young people by implementing religious programmes, lectures and sermons in mosques and schools. From the General Directorate of Social Development, Mr. Khalid bin Ahmed Tabuk, Head of the Guidance Department, participated in the session, in which he discussed the role of the General Directorate of Social Development in reducing this phenomenon, and the programs it provides to reduce the phenomenon of addiction and influences. From the General Directorate of Education, Mr. Ali bin Saif Habis, Supervisor of Social Education, discussed the effective role of education in implementing awareness programs for school students to reduce the phenomenon of the spread of drugs and psychotropic substances. The Counseling Week concluded with a ceremony honoring the Counseling Week participants under the patronage of Dr. Syed Ihsan Jameel, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, on Thursday, December 7, 2023.

Participants, whether from within the university or from external entities and institutions, praised the counseling week and the importance of raising awareness of such topics among university students because of its positive repercussions on their personality and behavior in the future.
