Third International Forum on Frankincense and Medicinal Plants Opens at Dhofar University, Welcoming Experts from 17 Countries

Dhofar University inaugurated the Third International Forum on Frankincense and Medicinal Plants on September 14, an event organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. The forum, held under the patronage of Her Excellency Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrooqiah, Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, from September 14 to 16. It brings together a distinguished group of scientists, researchers, and experts from 17 countries worldwide. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, officials, researchers, academics, and enthusiasts in the field of medicinal plants. The event commenced with the National Anthem of Oman and recitations from the Holy Quran, followed by a visual presentation outlining the forum’s objectives.In his opening speech, Professor Amer bin Ali Al Rawas, Dhofar University Vice Chancellor, emphasized the university’s commitment to scientific research and innovation as central pillars of its academic mission and future vision. He highlighted their importance in building a knowledge-based society and enhancing Oman’s competitiveness in alignment with Oman Vision 2040. Prof. Al Rawas noted that the Forum reflects the university’s dedication to serving as a national center of expertise, supporting the knowledge economy, and advancing research on medicinal plants and frankincense as both cultural heritage and a source of promising therapeutic potential. Engineer Rashid bin Saeed Al Ghafri, Director General of the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in the Governorate of Dhofar, delivered a speech on behalf of the Cooperation Committee between the Ministry and Dhofar University. He affirmed that the partnership between the two institutions serves as a leading model for integrating scientific research with practical application. He highlighted key achievements, including the funding of new research projects on frankincense products and the accreditation of Dhofar University’s frankincense testing laboratory as a service center for value-added industries. He also mentioned the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to expand frankincense tree cultivation, with new investments expected to add over 92,000 trees in the near future.

Professor Louay Rashan, Director of the Dhofar University Research Center, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the Forum’s main themes and scientific significance. This was followed by a presentation by Professor Ian Cook of Griffith University, Australia, who discussed the therapeutic properties of the Woodfordia uniflora plant from Dhofar Governorate in treating stomach ulcers and Clostridium perfringens bacterial infections. To honor her patronage, Professor Amer bin Ali Al Rawas presented a commemorative gift to Her Excellency Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrooqiah. The Minister then officially opened the accompanying exhibition, which featured government initiatives such as the Green Pharmacy Initiative for Dhofar, as well as private companies specializing in medicinal plant products. The Forum’s specialized scientific sessions then commenced in designated halls.

The organization of this forum underscores Dhofar Governorate’s status as a land of frankincense and medicinal plants, and reflects Dhofar University’s commitment to advancing scientific research in support of development and sustainability. Through such initiatives, the University continues to strengthen Oman’s position as a regional center for knowledge and innovation.
